ABSTRACT
The relationship between Islam and democratization in Indonesia is often misunderstood. In this chapter I argue that democracy has been central to Indonesian aspirations since independence and that Islam has played a major part in the achievement of democracy in Indonesia through its part in the actual processes by which democracy has been realized. My discussion reads a well-known record somewhat differently, and in a way that has implications for the political future of the country.
