ABSTRACT

An intellectual asset plan should describe how a given project, product or service will manage the intellectual assets it generates or accesses. As such intellectual asset plans can range from the complex to the simple; but in essence they should all address the following:

Is the extent of customer, partner, supplier, distributor and competitor’s access to, and ability to copy, key intellectual assets appropriate? Are the intellectual assets generated by, or imported into, the project (product or service) free of third party rights that would hinder their use? Will the project’s use of intellectual assets have a negative impact on other business activities? Will the intellectual assets needed during the project’s development be available when required? Should the project be importing existing, or sharing arising, intellectual assets with the rest of the business or third parties?
