ABSTRACT

We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know because they have never deceived us.

Samuel Johnson, diarist (1709-1784)

‘Social engineering’ is a euphemism adopted by computer hackers to describe the process by which an opponent deceives, entices or otherwise manipulates an unsuspecting person into revealing confidential information, or cajoles, blackmails or otherwise coerces his victim to obey instructions. Against the odds, this strange expression has gained general acceptance.
