ABSTRACT

In 1567, the printer Hans Wolrab produced an image of Christians in the German town of Bautzen (Figure 11.1 below). e woodcut depicts the peaceful coexistence of two confessional communities. On the le, well-dressed Catholic patrons kneel before an altar for the celebration of the Eucharist. At the right, Lutherans listen to the preaching of the Word. In simultaneous worship, the two congregations sit so close together that several members’ backs touch. Two members of the Lutheran congregation – one sitting on the bench at the image’s right border and the other beneath the pulpit – appear to be paying attention not to their own preacher, but to the Catholic Mass.
