Brass, the alloy of copper and zinc, was available in Britain only by importation until the late sixteenth century. During the reign of Henry VIII the absence of the indigenous copper mining which had been a feature of the Roman occupation and the need for brass for military and industrial purposes became a matter for concern and a series of statutes prohibited the re-export of these materials.
