ABSTRACT
The conference at Hampton Court from which the chapters in this volume derive was one among many exhibitions, publications and events to mark the quincentenary of Henry VIII’s accession in 2009. It would be rash to claim to sum them all up here. What I hope to do instead is to reflect on what these chapters and some of the other commemorations tell us about how and why historians’ views of Henry have been changing in and around his anniversary year.
