ABSTRACT
Subject to the following qualifications, this checklist is a working bibliography of
all of Grant Allen’s published work. Allen was a prolific and popular writer whose
work was reprinted frequently. In order to keep this checklist within manageable
bounds only the first appearance of each of his publications is given. In most cases
that is the first British appearance, except where the item was never published in
Britain, or its first British appearance cannot be traced, or it apparently appeared in
the United States or Australia first. For the novels, many of which were first
serialised in newspapers and magazines, the ‘first appearance’ is taken to be the first
publication in book form, although brief details of the preceding serial are given too.
In the case of the essay and story-collections, all the contents are listed individually.
In some cases the first known appearance of some of the constituent items is the
volume itself because no earlier periodical publication can be traced. This is shown
in the entries.
