ABSTRACT
The police and prosecutors have been instructed to develop measures so that they can work more effectively to prevent violence against women. This chapter summarises some of the research on violence against women that has been conducted in Sweden. In combination, knowledge based on both of these sources of information should nonetheless yield a fairly adequate picture of violence against women in Sweden. Statistics Sweden has conducted annual surveys of the living conditions of Swedish citizens since 1978. These surveys have included a number of questions relating to crime victimisation. The definition of violence employed in this study was more inclusive than that employed in the studies conducted by Statistics Sweden. The victimised woman may also redefine and neutralise the violence she is experiencing. As the police and prosecutors become more experienced in dealing with this offence, it is clear that more men will be imprisoned for domestic violence.
