ABSTRACT

With the creation of the Bundeswehr in 1955, and in the context of past military excesses, it was necessary to provide reassurance that the reestablishment of military power in Germany was compatible with liberal democracy. As a result the concept of Innere Führung was established as the ethical foundation of the German armed forces. This chapter examines the meaning of Innere Führung and the methods which the Bundeswehr uses to instil it into its members. Although the concept is unique to Germany, its principles may be equally valuable in other societies.
