ABSTRACT
Opening up the economy to forces o f international competition - its timing, phasing, sequencing and exact mechanics - has been the most controversial component o f the economic liberalization package in developing countries like India. This chapter seeks to clarify some o f the major issues in external liberalization, with special reference to the recent Indian experience. What is true for India should be relevant for many other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
