ABSTRACT
Patrick Wormald made his mighty contribution to history in two ways: first, by his work on the Anglo-Saxon laws, more enduring than bronze; second, by his high calibre salvoes in debate. One of these, his O’Donnell lecture ‘Celtic and AngloSaxon kingship: some further thoughts’,1 stimulated the present paper (which makes no claims to completeness in either content or references).
