ABSTRACT

The reign of Edward the Elder is not well endowed with primary sources, unlike that of his father, Alfred the Great.1 Even its chronology long remained uncertain, though some acute studies have now provided a sound framework.2 The AngloSaxon Chronicle is of crucial importance in providing a chronological record of his kingship and Janet Bately’s edition of the A version of the Chronicle (Cambridge, Corpus Christi College, MS 173, also known as the ‘Parker Chronicle’) now presents solid manuscript authority for the dating of Edward’s activities; this paper will follow the dates used in her edition.3
