ABSTRACT
This chapter is based on my experience as Buildings Manager in the National Library of Scotland (NLS) since 1988. My understanding of how fire affects libraries is based on the refurbishment and fire safety project carried out at the NLS George IV Bridge Building between 1990 and 1999, and the research and investigation I had to undertake to direct the project itself.
