ABSTRACT

This chapter will look only at the issue of digital identity and fraud and the legislation to which it is subject.

In December 2004, it was reported that 100,000 UK citizens were the victims of identity fraud in 2003, a rise of 29 per cent.1 The victims of identity theĞ lost £1.3 billion.2 In addition, it takes the average victim 18 months to realize that they have been targeted and an average 400 hours to repair the damage caused by identity theĞ. It has recently been reported that 2000 UK online bank users have been victims of phishing scams in the past 12 months, losing a total of £4.5 million.3
