ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to highlight the probable crises at ports in general and the ports in Turkey in particular that are regularly encountered and to put forward the means of minimising damages they are likely to bring about. It considers a crisis as the simplest definition, "a state of being complex" or "any unexpected occurrence breaking the established routine" with a further meaning of "a serious threat resulting in danger terminating port operation". The chapter also considers the broad-scale effects of crises and the economic, social, environmental, regional and/or national losses that ports bring. Considering the multi-faced feature and the diversified effects of crises in ports, the chapter proposes certain proactive measures and reactive means to achieve efficient restoration of services. It examines the relationship of national and international regulations and develops a detailed questionnaire carried out within the ports in Turkey.
