ABSTRACT
In 1973, when the United Nations issued a document using for the first time the terms ‘tourist’ and ‘tourism’, it was acknowledged we were faced with the need to create a comprehensive definition which was able to contain the sense of a practice which up until then was largely perceived to do with social customs and behaviours.
