ABSTRACT

The aim of Church Growth in Britain is not to airbrush out such decline but to highlight the sides of the story which have been hitherto marginalized. Since church decline is widely publicized and church growth is almost totally ignored in wider debate, the focus of this chapter is on church growth. The number of new churches, from all denominations, that have started up since 1980 is startling. The chapter suggests that mainline churches continue to fail to release the energies of black, Asian and minority ethnic Christians within their ranks. There is a connection between economic dynamism, the consequent attraction of migrants, population growth and the growth of churches. The chronology outlined provides the justification for starting this study in 1980. By this point the real shift to secular dominance in Britain had already happened.
