ABSTRACT

The Information Systems Strategy called for a Corporate Bibliographic Programme. In 1997 the Library awarded a contract to Axis Resources under the principles of the government's Private Finance Initiative for the design, implementation and operation of the Programme based on AMICUS, a commercial package in use at the National Library of Canada. The Library also made a significant contribution to the work of the UNESCO Commission for the Rehabilitation of the Russian State Library in Moscow. Another example of the Library's engagement with Eastern Europe was the assistance given to the National Library of Sarajevo following the Dayton peace agreement in 1995. The Library recognized that its role in the modern information world was not only to provide access for researchers to its rich collections through its reading rooms, although this remained an essential element of its mission. Engaging in and encouraging wider cooperation among information providers was increasingly important.
