ABSTRACT

A historian working on medieval western Europe who is confronted by three extremely interesting and quite dierent papers on Byzantine history is bound to be stimulated to make comparisons. ese three papers, with all their dierences of subject, approach and sources, show how suggestive and illuminating comparisons can be, even while they illustrate some of the problems of making them.
