ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews how in the Netherlands' principles of sustainability are applied in the development of business estates. It provides the various perspectives that can be taken to apply the principles of sustainability to the development of business estates. A gap between theory and practice seems to exist, because of the difficulty to convert abstract principles into operational policies and decisions. The chapter describes the procedures used in the Netherlands to develop such estates. It discusses the themes that are actually brought to bear on the process of the development of sustainable business estates. The chapter considers the options that are available to reduce the amount of space being claimed for business estates. It discusses a number of institutional barriers to the provision of sustainable business estates in relation to the land-development process. The actual implementation of the measures clashes with the current common practice of land development in the Netherlands, where the municipalities are the main agents.
