ABSTRACT

493I've just come back from a walk down the corridors outside my university office. The halls are carpeted. The lighting is good. Secretaries in the main office occupy an attractive, welcoming space. Individual offices have been redecorated within the recent past. Outside the windows birds sing in the large green trees. It's a Wednesday afternoon in June, and I'm looking for someone to talk to. But, with only one exception, there are no professors in the offices I've just walked by.
