ABSTRACT

The discovery and transmission of truth is the distinctive task of the academic profession, just as the care of the health of the patient is the distinctive task of the medical profession, and the protection of the client's rights and interests is the distinctive task of the legal profession. Politics became more interesting to more academics as the air filled with wars and rumours of wars, amplified by radio and television-broadcasting. The obligations of the academic profession are inherent in the custodianship of the pursuit, acquisition, assessment, and transmission of knowledge through systematic study, in accordance with methodical procedures including observational techniques, rules of evidence and principles of logical reasoning. The academic ethic is the sum of these obligations which are involved in the pursuit and transmission of advanced knowledge and in roles and in conduct affected by the real or presumed possession of such knowledge.
