ABSTRACT
Haliday was born in Cilfden in County Down on 21 November 1807. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, where he was awarded a gold medal in classics. Subsequently he studied for the bar but practised for only a short period. Haliday’s first paper, ‘Notices of Insects taken in the North of Ireland’, was published while he was still a student. Thereafter he published extensively and, moved to Dublin, assisted with the Natural History Review.
