ABSTRACT

Theatre history is a branch of Shakespeare studies with a long and rich tradition. In the Actors’ Shakespeare, the authors rely on multiple experiences of watching actors in performance, as well as on interviews and participation in rehearsals or workshops. In the light of the international success of contemporary Spanish artists and the explosion of “Shakespearemania” on the Spanish stage in the last decade, it is hard to believe that Shakespeare was not immediately successful in Spain. Surveying “the state of the Bard,” that is reviewing books on Shakespeare from 2010–2011 with a focus on drama, theatre, and cinema, along with recent online databases, inevitably involves selection and generalization. The database allows for searching Shakespeare productions staged in Dublin, from the Restoration period to the establishment of the Abbey Theatre. It additionally lists the productions staged in Belfast between 1820 and 1900 in an Excel spreadsheet.
