Its formation date is uncertain, but the rulebook of one lodge dates from 1748 and the address of the society itself was (in 1794) given as the Yorkshire Grey Inn, Hart Street, Bloomsbury. In 1796 the registered address moved to the Yorkshire Grey Inn, Swallow Street, Piccadilly and in 1799 the Royal Exchange Inn, Adams Mews, Charles Street, Grosvenor Square.
