ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book shows how most of the contemporary theories and knowledge bases that are currently being applied to transport planning and practice in the Global South are directly or indirectly derived from western models. In parallel to the more obvious differences, it also confirms that there are certain similarities between the results and consequences of transport development in the Global North and South. A second observation arising from the book is the stubborn and 'sticky' nature of urban development problems, such as the transport planning and mobilities issues that it identifies. The main objective of the book is to create a knowledge-based starting point for more inclusive planning for sustainable mobilities in cities of the Global South, and for post-colonial cities worldwide.
