ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the visitor interaction with farm animals at publicly accessible farms is associated with a positive impression of a farm by fostering a sense of authenticity and familiarity that is often absent from other producer–consumer interactions. Ethical consumption in agritourism and begin with the idea that consumption is an act of identity-construction whereby consumers routinely make choices that reinforce their understanding of themselves and the world. Agritourism has become more important to farmers as a source of additional income in Suffolk County and throughout New York. The experience of agritourists to Long Island's North Fork was collected using Yelp review data. Yelp review data has, at times, been called into question due to possibility of fraudulent reviews. Suffolk's farmers generate a large portion of the state's agricultural sales and Suffolk is consistently one of New York's most lucrative agricultural regions.
