ABSTRACT

In 'The possibilities of comics reading: Uncovering a complex and situated reading experience in Canada', Lucia Cedeira Serantes outlines a research project that sought to explore and understand the role of comics in the lives of young people, emphasising the experience of the readers themselves. This chapter argues very strongly that bringing small-scale qualitative studies together is one way of doing what Jason Jensen and Robert Rodgers describe as cumulating 'intellectual gold'. Approaches to reading research within education have often been determined by contemporary practices in the teaching and learning of reading in schools. In many parts of the world, however, teaching and learning have been increasingly dominated by ideas about young people's performance as readers. Finally, the chapter presents an overview of this book. The book focuses on, a group that ranges from those who have left childhood behind to those who are moving into adulthood.
