ABSTRACT

In Turkey, there are both public and private schools, but they both follow the National Curriculum. At the time this study was undertaken, the Board of National Education in Turkey (BNET), suggested –on 'Turkish literature' and 'language and expression' within the secondary education curriculum – that the main purposes of language and literature teaching were skills and understanding. The study took place in Adana, which is the fifth largest city in Turkey with a population of just over 2,000,000. Most adults worked in farming, industry and the civil service. According to the Turkey Reading Culture Map research, approximately 2.5% of the total populations in Adana were library members and about 6% of people used public libraries. The fictional text can make the readers examine or change their own moral values, influence their psychology and behaviour, and perhaps even shape their personality.
