ABSTRACT

Lebanon is a small country on the Mediterranean Sea, with an area of 10,452 square kilometres. It is bordered by the sea to the west, Syria to the north and east, and Israel to the south. Because the last census was in 1932, there are no official figures to tell about population size or make-up. However, at the time of study, the population was around 4.6 million, in addition to around 400,000 Palestinian refugees. Schools in Lebanon and at the time of the study can be broadly categorised into two types: private schools and government-run schools. At the outset, study focus on how young adults in Lebanon at that time felt about reading for pleasure: whether they engaged in it, and why or why not. From author’s own experience growing up, living, and working in Lebanon, author had the impression that although reading was valued and literacy rates were relatively high, very few people read for pleasure.
