ABSTRACT

The utopian city is based on the idea of improvement of humankind starting with the establishment of a new location gifted with characteristics of great urban organization. To talk about Utopia in the past city is necessary to mention Thomas More, who, in 1516, created the idea of Utopia, describing an imaginary island with a perfect society. In his book, the meaning of the word Utopia is presented, the “u” being the negation of the word topos, place in Greek. The utopian city can then be characterized as the city that does not exist, or the antithesis of the actual city. That is also the way the island developed in Thomas More’s Utopia. Utopian island was considered the only true republic in the world where collective interests were placed ahead of personal ones. Everything belonged to everyone and there was no shortage of anything. Moreover, in this narrative, the end of private property is discussed as the solution to an ideal society, as is the egalitarian distribution of everything that was produced by society.
