ABSTRACT

In the simplest terms, identity refers to the representation of an individual; hence, it signifies who one is. Aspects such as culture, language, nationality, religion, ideology, beliefs, a socio-political setting, etc. will further influence the identity of an individual and their sense of belonging. According to Castells (2004:6), identity as “the process of construction of meaning on the basis of a cultural attribute, or a related set of cultural attributes, that is given priority over other sources of meaning.” Hence it can be seen as a “people’s source of

When Poland joined the European Union in May 2004, thousands and then millions decided to migrate to other EU countries in search for a better life. The United Kingdom (UK) experiences the largest migration wave, though exact estimates of the number of Polish migrants are not available due to less than perfect data collection tools available within united Europe. Nonetheless, the 2011 Census revealed the vast scale of the Polish language spoken in England and Wales.
