ABSTRACT

Some character educationists present akrasia as a stage of character development. However, it often rather seems to be a stable character trait. Why does akrasia sometimes not develop into self-control or, alternatively, degrade into vice? Internal conflict, regret and self-knowledge give reason to believe that akrasia is likely to change. However, internal conflict and regret often have no transforming effect on akrasia because they can be relatively short-lived. Self-knowledge can fail to help the akratēs to alter his ways, because the contexts in which he is vulnerable to akrasia may themselves be strongly embedded in societal structures.
