ABSTRACT

The chapter discusses embodiment from a flesh and bones approach that considers the physical body as a breathing, muscled, veined coordinated being that is integral to how people traverse, communicate, and are present in the world. Discursive approaches to analyzing corporality have offered great insight into the field of embodiment, but some scholars – particularly in Sociology – have questioned if the tangibility of the physical body has been lost. The chapter describes a method of analysis that explores the physical and sensorial dimensions of embodiment. Using techniques and ways of studying movement from dance, It investigated how the gestures, movements, and affect of a teacher contribute to communication in the classroom. In essence, it is an approach to studying embodiment through an engagement with the experiential body. In a subsequent qualitative research methodology class, we were asked to attend a guitar festival and share field notes from the event.
