The declaration o f war in 1914 did not find Leautaud among the excited crowds who filled the Paris streets with their shouts o f ‘A Berlin!5 He was supremely unenthusiastic. ‘Marriage pro­ duces cuckolds,5 he had once said, ‘and patriotism fools.5 The raucous jingoism of his fellow countrymen disgusted him. He did not care a brass button whether Alsace and Lorraine stayed under German rule or came back to France.
