ABSTRACT

Leautaud knew that the poetry he had written was worthless and that his mannered little cprose poems’ were without value. Perhaps believing that the daily life around him would be a source o f inspiration, he had begun to keep a diary. This dated back some years. The first entry was made on 3 November 1893 and recorded a dream he had about the man who eventually married Jeanne Marie, his first mistress. As yet, though, the diary was a haphazard affair with long gaps between entries.
