ABSTRACT

Mapping job redesign onto an organisational context is a difficult exercise, but nevertheless it is an activity which people managing the project must necessarily undertake. As such this chapter talks about a broader systemic view of the project, and attempts to trace the principal effects of the changes on three different functions within the firm. The three different functions are: production planning, engineering and marketing. The chapter aims to demonstrate using examples, how the functional interactions may be added in to the speculative model to place it in a broader organisational context. The significance of the impact of maintenance on productivity is now formally recognised in the organisation by the attempts to make the maintenance engineers directly responsible to line management. The speculative contact by the researchers led to their meeting first the factory and departmental managers, and subsequently all the departmental staff in an informal meeting.
