ABSTRACT

This conversation illuminates the training of Zhou Long and Chen Yi at Central Conservatory, Beijing, their subsequent study with Chou at Columbia University, Chou’s roles at Columbia University and the US-China Arts Exchange, his teaching as an interdisciplinary venture, and his integrity as a composer unconcerned with commercialism. Discussion of Chou’s orthography informs our understanding of Chou’s creative process. Composers whom Chou considers pivotal – especially Varèse – enter into the discussion. The observations show that each of Chou’s students has developed stylistic independence and a unique compositional voice.
