ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the knowledge of sports coaches from a variety of sports on the theory and practical applications of recovery techniques. The majority of coaches were of the opinion that recovery was only necessary after hard training or competition and the overwhelming feeling was that sports coaches were able to accurately gauge the recovery necessary. The novice and developmental coaches, not surprisingly, all rated injury, physical recovery, and fatigue as very important for recovery. The inclusion of massage at the stage may be misleading, as customarily massage treatment is available at swimming competitions, ostensibly to enhance recovery between events during a long day of racing. As a result, the swimming coaches were all very enthusiastic about the use of massage as a recovery, a developmental swimming coach stating. The swimming coaches, on the other hand, mentioned several relaxation techniques that they considered assisted with the recovery process, for example, meditation, centring and progressive muscular relaxation.
