ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on impaired performance through somatic and psychological health problems resulting from stress and underrecovery. Periods of stress and lack of recovery can be expected in athletes. However, besides somatic effects, psychological outcomes are also apparent. Monitoring of athletes’ stress and recovery states is therefore an important basis. Research also indicates the importance regarding the promotion of recovery and building individual resources in order to successfully cope with stress. One clear advantage in monitoring athletes’ state of stress and recovery is apparent when focusing the influence of stress. Especially in high-intensity sport disciplines, where performance is largely based of high levels of amount of trainings loads, monitoring can provide coaches and athletes important information. Building and developing adequate coping strategies and functional attitudes might highlight important aspects in putting athletes in a promising position for balancing stress and recovery in a successful manner.
