ABSTRACT

'Experiential learning' is used to describe the skills and knowledge acquired through personal experience outside, at the margins of and occasionally within conventional educational institutions. This learning has characteristically not been recognized through any formal assessment or certification process, although movements have been made to suggest ways in which its value may be assessed against academic entry requirements in both further and higher education. Prior experiential learning which describes the knowledge and skills which students carry with them from informal learning-from-life acquired outside or through the informal curriculum of schools and colleges. Experiential learning builds on the premise that individuals learn more effectively when they are actively involved in the learning process. Recording experiential learning is also controversial because it requires learners not only to identify significant features of their own learning but also to open them to more public scrutiny.
