ABSTRACT

Social education centres are the responsibility of the Local Authority Social Services Directorate. They provide day care and training and attempt to meet the social needs of people with learning difficulties. Multi-purpose day centres provide training, occupation and management of people with challenging behaviour and give respite care to families who otherwise would have to provide day and night care. Colleges can be more selective in their choice of clients than social education centres but they have an expected percentage of disaffected students. Staff training became the responsibility of the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work. Disaffection in social education centres is generally seen as a situation where individuals or groups are not attending or are only attending occasionally. The Campaign for Mental Handicap produced helpful papers on aspects of mentally handicapped people's lives and fought against injustices.
