ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the importance of tourism for developing countries, while assessing their relevance for the German outbound market. The role of tourism in development cooperation is outlined, together with Germany’s involvement and the most relevant fields of action. The tourism industry is one of the largest and most important economic sectors worldwide. Travel and tourism to developing countries is also of great significance for the German outbound market. The greatest challenges in the future of German outbound travel to developing countries as seen by the tour operators will be the development of convincing offers and pricing. The majority of tourism attractions in developing countries, such as pristine natural landscapes, rich wildlife, unique heritage sites and vibrant indigenous cultures are intrinsically linked to biodiversity. The ecological effects of tourism can be broadly grouped in direct and indirect impacts. The socio-cultural impacts of tourism on host societies and cultures in developing countries cannot be generalized.
