ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that the dichotomy and its associated power discourses are an inherited colonial notion that took on the form of geopolitical propaganda during the Cold War and led to the many problems of development news in the Western media. It presents the key problems in a hope that journalists might reconsider past and present practices to produce better, more informed, more daring and more enlightening news accounts on development in the future. The chapter also discusses that the development policies are the latest in a continuum that dates back to colonial times in which 'civilisation' and 'barbarism' were seen as distinctive lines between the Empire and its colonies. It argues that prevalent ideas help those working in the newsroom understand the world around them are based upon very strong conventions. Finally, the chapter also presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in this book.
