ABSTRACT

Biological treatments can be conducted to reduce the COD of industrial wastewater either aerobically or anaerobically. Nevertheless, due to high COD levels, it is unfeasible to treat some pharmaceutical wastewater through an aerobic process (Paul 2008). Another possible route to treat wastewater is the anaerobic digestion process (Samir and Huang 2003; Chen et al. 2008). Before being digested, the feedstocks have to undergo pretreatment. There are various types of pretreatment depending on the feedstocks availability. The aim of such pretreatment is to mix different feedstock and remove unwanted materials, such as large items and inert materials, to allow a better digestate quality (Oz et al. 2004).
