ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys numeracy practices of kiwifruit orchard managers and of urban refuse and recycling truck operators. It is clear that each role moves beyond mere calculations and measurements. Although there are respective situational differences, there are also similarities with a widespread use of estimation amidst spatial and temporal constraints. The regular on-the-spot estimates were almost invisible to the managers and operators, or at least discounted as being mathematics. Their roles are very different from what happens in most educational institutions, so investigating mathematics in the boundary zone (s), particularly sharing the numerous strategies people use to estimate, remains a continuing priority.
