ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the magnitude of the problem of racism for those who work with young children. It is important to do this because the usual portrayals of racism as disaffection are associated with older people. The chapter discusses the nature of the racism is so contained within the children's own culture that it can be almost or completely invisible to adults, whether parents or teachers. The formula 'Prejudice plus Power equals Racism' is often used to convey this contemporary understanding. The views about young children held by many child-centred educationists, certainly until recent times, now seem very naive. A significant number of Local Education Authorities and schools have now adopted written policy statements on racism, racial equality or multicultural education.
