ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the latest research and practice agenda of building professional capital for lasting educational change. Investing in professional capital and human agency is a necessary and integral part of enacting and sustaining systems change that supports innovation, creativity, autonomy, trust, and socially just culture and practice. Jon Saphier discusses the need for a deeply collaborative culture in professional development to encourage the "kind of problem-solving in which true professionals engage". The chapter describes effective professional learning through quality content, learning design and implementation, and support and sustainability. Last, Saphier shares his expertise on building adult professional capital through systems change by treating educators as experts in their fields and moving past the norm of the well-known and common forced teacher meetings and quick-hit professional development trainings into true collaborative learning and cultures.
