ABSTRACT

The oil companies conspired to turn all cars into internal combustion engines through many political maneuvers and even colluded to ensure that new cities would be designed around such vehicles instead of around public transportation, which was powered by electricity. The financial institutions have been the enablers of the fossil fuel industry, and they continue to be. Some solar companies are themselves becoming financial institutions and engage in creative financing and lending, the same kind that led us to the 2008 financial crisis. Divesting from fossil fuels by taking money out of the institutions and investments is a step forward to transitioning to renewables. The fossil fuel industry has managed to get behind or be the cause of most conflicts around the globe to ensure continued access to dirty energy, and governments have engaged accordingly. Many gas-fired power plants can be retrofitted to use hydrogen, and the hydrogen can be generated with solar power using electrolysis and ocean water.
