ABSTRACT

This chapter shows, step by step, how to apply constructal design, associated with an exhaustive search method, to discover a better configuration in the following devices: solar chimney power plant (SCPP), oscillating water column (OWC), and earth–air heat exchanger (EAHE). The design of SCPP is shown, explaining didactically all the details of the method. The architectures that improve the performance of OWC and EAHE are studied to reinforce the application of the method. Society is increasing its energy needs: everybody wants to have a better life. Better means education, more travel, power, and leisure. However, these needs are followed by the search for clean and renewable sources of energy. Solar energy is among the most promising alternatives. One possibility for converting solar energy into electricity is the SCPP. Constructal design and exhaustive search are employed to achieve geometric optimal shapes in flow systems.
